Baby Shoes?!?!?!

During the next few months, if not years, I think I am going to be eating a lot of crow. I used to believe that I wouldn’t have those panic moments of worry about motherhood. I was going to let it happen and just deal with any thoughts or feelings of worry that may –or may not – arise.

The other night I had my first mini “Oh Good Golly” thought. I was watching Lisa's year in pictures video. (Which is a fantastic video of Briana!) As I was watching I kept noticing that Bri had several cute little shoes. Suddenly a little, tiny butterfly started in my stomach, soon one little butterfly led to several huge, honkin’ bats as I started to worry about baby shoes! Baby shoes people!!

In my head I started hearing:

  • You have to buy her shoes
  • You don’t know how to buy baby shoes
  • You have no clue how to buy little girl shoes!!
  • They come in strange sizes! A one is bigger than a three ~ what the Hell?
  • What if I buy them too small?

I can laugh about it now, but I kid you not I was frazzled. It was a very strange little conversation that went on in my head. A mini- “Oh Good Golly what are you doing?” – passed through.

Don’t worry! I don’t need a straight jacket, yet! I didn’t talk back to myself! I was able to rationalize through it all; after I walked away from the computer, took some deep breaths, and a swig from the Makers bottle. (Just kidding about the Makers – we’re out!)

Thankfully after an email from my friend Lynette she was able to calm my nerves about the shoes, oh and the pediatrician! Thanks Lynette! I have a feeling that as we get closer to Polar Cub there may be a few more of these mini “Oh Good Golly” moments. I better find some good recipes for crow, stock up on some more Makers, and keep my phone charged – All my 'Been There, Done That" friends, be ready for some crazy texts! :o)

  1. Love seeing all the cute shoes..
I will have to find the cute websites that supply these..
I tooo keep wondering what sizes..
    but will be fun ..
    Happy New Year...

  2. You will be "rationalizing through it all" forever. My kiddos are now 31 & 33yrs. old and I'm still rationalizing through it. You're feelings are no different than every new mom in the world and believe me..........you will be just fine because your heart is in the right place.

  3. That's so funny because I've also had similar freak outs. The whole "I hate waiting... But I'm not ready" conflict. And the shoe size thing IS really confusing. I'm still not sure on that one. LOL!

Don't worry though. I know that in spite of our freak outs... we'll figure it all out in the end. :)

  4. don't buy until you are IN china, that was good sound advice for me! and then when you know her size, you can come home and go crazy :O)

i LOVE that your having little freak outs. oh girl. the real freak out is COMING... referral. hope we don't have to wait much longer :O)

  5. I had so many pairs of shoes that I had to give away because they were too small for Sophia. No worries though...I just re-stocked after we brought her home. Girls shoes are so FUN! Don't worry...you'll have no troubles buying girls shoes...maybe a little trouble with buying too many :)

  6. LOL! You are so sweet! Sorry I caused you to hyperventilate a little! HAAAA!!

Briana has been home with me for two years and I still have freak out moments. Briana was placed in my arms and I just went on autopilot. You'll be amazed at how much instinct kicks in. And I have pretty much learned everything I know "on the job."

One of the biggest things that has helped me has definitely been asking questions to the "been there, done that" crowd. Ask lots and lots and lots of questions!! I have gotten so much good advice that way. No question is too crazy!

When it comes to shoes, Briana was a size two to size three at one year old. I think that is pretty normal. And to be honest, don't worry about shoes because you buy them and they grow out of them in six months anyway! :)

You are going to be a great mama! And when you see your child's face for the first time, all the "Oh Good Gollys" will fade away.

  7. Wanted to drop by and wish you a great 2010 - this is our year... take care...

  8. SO funny and oh so true. The things that can set an about to be mummy into a panic are to numerous to count. One of my favourite things to do is go back in into my blog archives and read about the wait post referral. BASKET CASE! I have no idea how I ever managed to make it to China, not once but twice.
Enjoy these moments and write them down because eventually they will crack you up!
So very happy for you and Big Bear cos it is getting closer...much much closer. You'd better buy some shoes for Polar Cub.

  9. I brought 2 pairs of shoes to China and they were both too big. She wares them now. Shoe shopping is fun if you can get them to try on the shoes before you spend the money. sometimes I just measure and go and hope they fit.

You will be a great Mom:)

  10. LOL! Looks like the butterflies are kicking in because you are getting closer! I didn't lose my shit till we were in the elevator going down to meet Eme and then I had the 'what the hell' moment. I was breathing deep & all. Naturally, the minute I saw her it's been nothing but grand.
All the anxiety will disappear the minute they hand you your child.

Welcome friend to 2010! This is going to be your year!

  11. We didn't buy any shoes for Maddy until we were in China. Then, she wouldn't let us put any new shoes on her as she wanted the ones that came on her feet. She let us change her clothes, but not her shoes. Now, we love going to Target, Payless etc where we can get multiple shoes and I don't have to feel bad if she only wears them for a brief amount of time because they weren't outright expensive in the first place. You'll get the hang of it very quickly :0)

  12. I'm still freaking out. haha =) You're gonna be amazing, Polar Bear Mama! And yes, finally someone else I "follow" is NEXT! YOU!!!! =) =) =)

  13. Just found you through Lisa's (Brianna) blog. I love finding new blogs to follow - especially of folks gearing up for 'the call'. Can't wait to see/read your news.

    Cheers, Kiy

  14. Isn't it funny what we get frazzled about? Little Miss H has no less that 30 pair of shes (mostly donated used ones) and I'll be honest that in the 2 months we've been together she's worn 1 pair 3x and that's it! She's still so little and I hate to shove her little feet into shoes since she's not even crawling let alone walking. It will happen soon enough though.

Yah, those moments of panic are rough! Mine was when I realized I'd need to feed her in China and didn't have a clue what to feed her! A quick trip to the March DTC group calmed my nerves.

If there's ever anything I can help you with friend I'm just an email or phone call away! No question/concern is too little or too big. BTDT!

    ((hugs)) xo
